Forward Modeling of Galaxy Populations for Cosmological Redshift Distribution Inference

چکیده
Abstract We present a forward-modeling framework for estimating galaxy redshift distributions from photometric surveys. Our forward model is composed of: detailed population describing the intrinsic distribution of physical characteristics galaxies, encoding evolution physics; stellar synthesis connecting properties galaxies to their photometry; data characterizing observation and calibration processes given survey; explicit treatment selection cuts, both into main analysis sample subsequent sorting tomographic bins. This approach has appeal that it does not rely on spectroscopic data, provides control over modeling assumptions builds direct bridge between photo- z inference physics. High Redshift Galaxy Populations and their Descendants
We study model predictions for the abundance and clustering of high-redshift galaxies, and for the properties of their descendants. We focus on three high-redshift populations: Lyman break galaxies at z ∼ 3 (LBGs), optically selected star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 2 (BXs), and distant red galaxies at z ∼ 2 (DRGs). We select model galaxies from mock catalogues using the observationally defined col...
متن کاملReconstruction of cosmological initial conditions from galaxy redshift catalogues
We present and test a new method for the reconstruction of cosmological initial conditions from a full-sky galaxy catalogue. This method, called ZTRACE, is based on a self-consistent solution of the growing mode of gravitational instabilities according to the Zel’dovich approximation and higher order in Lagrangian perturbation theory. Given the evolved redshift-space density field, smoothed on ...
متن کاملThe 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey as a Cosmological Laboratory
The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) of 230,000 redshifts of nearby (z ∼ 0.1) galaxies is now complete. It has allowed the 2dFGRS team and others to estimate fundamental cosmological parameters and to study galaxy intrinsic properties. Here we highlight three recent key results from the survey: (i) an upper limit of about 2eV on the total mass of the three neutrino flavours, and an intriguin...
متن کاملCosmological Results from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey
The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) has produced a three-dimensional map of the distribution of 221,000 galaxies covering 5% of the sky and reaching out to a redshift z≈ 0.3. This is first map of the large-scale structure in the local Universe to probe a statistically representative volume, and provides direct evidence that the large-scale structure of the Universe grew through gravitationa...
متن کاملModeling Galaxy Clustering with Cosmological Simulations
I review recent progress in understanding and modeling galaxy clustering in cosmological simulations, with emphasis on models based on high-resolution dissipationless simulations. During the last decade, significant advances in our understanding of abundance and clustering of dark matter halos allowed construction of accurate, quantitative models of galaxy clustering both in linear and non-line...
